UK based Mailchimp alternative.
Ok, So this is a video where we talk about an alternative to Mailchimp. If you are a UK business then you may want to consider using a UK based email marketing software provider.
Well, we are of course biased here, but this isn’t a Mailchimp bashing video - in fact, Mailchimp is great, it’s fairly easy to use and is a popular choice for businesses in America and all over the world.
If you are a UK business though, before signing up with our friends across the water, there are a few factors to take into consideration first.
Location of servers.
Mailchimp’s servers are based in America, this means that if you are a UK business then when you upload a list of your contacts email addresses, you are effectively exporting their information to America.
In the E.U and U.K, the law called GDPR details explicitly how your contacts private data must be stored and processed. GDPR covers the E.U and U.K > not the U.S, this means that by uploading your contacts to a server that doesn’t live inside Europe, you are placing these people’s private data outside of the protection of the law.
GDPR doesn’t say that you can’t do this though, but it does say that you need to seek the permission of all of your contacts to leave the protection of GDPR.
You’ll find that companies based in America say “we are fully GDPR compliant” - but all this means is that by you signing up to use them, somewhere in their small print you’ll have agreed having the O.K from your contacts to export their data to the U.S.
So, for convenience and peace of mind, it’s really worth using UK or EU based servers to store your contacts private data if you are a UK business.
Like I said at the top of this video, this isn’t an impartial video as we make UK based email marketing software - but none the less, if you are a UK based company, it just makes sense to use UK based data storage.
Customer support.
If you are new to email marketing or even if you are an experienced pro, there are probably going to be times when you’d like a helping hand or just a fresh set of eyes to have a look at your campaign.
Whilst the big American companies may offer great support, the differences in times zones make it virtually impossible to offer a quick response. You can’t reach them by telephone and often it’ll take at least a day until you get a reply to an email.
